October 2007

With the beginning of October my thoughts always turn to football, the World Series, the cooling temperatures, changing leaves and stewardship. It’s October, you know I had to get that one in there somehow!

This is an exciting time in the life of First Church. There are many things that we are trying to build in the church. There are many ministries that we are trying to grow. Our children’s Sunday school program is thriving (we need to build a larger list of substitute teachers though, if you want to volunteer call the church office and let us know). Our youth program is off to a great start with lots of youth having fun, serving others, and growing in their faith. Our worship attendance is way up and a sense of spiritual renewal is in the air.

Of course, there is always more to do, more ways we can grow. I see a great need for adult educational and spiritual renewal opportunities. There is a need for more hands-on mission activities. And I see a need for us to better communicate to the community around us who the church is and what the church is about and how they can be part of something growing and exciting! Of course, all of this takes prayer support, people support and financial support.

As you begin to pray about how it is that God would have you respond to the needs of the church, I hope that you will think about the ways you can contribute through your time, talent and financial resources.

The great German poet Goethe writes: “Whatever you can do or dream you can do, begin it. Boldness has genius, power and magic in it. Begin it now.” I challenge all of us to dream of what we can do as a church right now! Let us be bold in our doing! The challenge is for each of us to step forward today, to answer the calling of God upon our lives and the church.

The call is being put forth – members of First Presbyterian Church you are needed!
You are needed to work with the children, youth and adults. You are needed to teach a class, to lead a mission team, to visit the sick, to lead a small group. You are needed to serve on a ministry committee, to help plan fellowship activities. You are needed! And yes, your financial gift is needed, too.

In 2008 we are moving forward into God’s calling for us as a church. We must trust God is leading us and have faith to step into God’s future! I am asking that you pray deeply upon God’s calling upon your life and this church. Pray that you will give yourself fully to the work of the Lord!

Therefore, my dear brothers and sisters, stand firm. Let nothing move you. Always give fully to the work of the Lord, because you know that your labor in the Lord is not in vain. 1 Cor. 15:58

Keep your hearts open and your faith strong!
